Beanstalk, a children’s literacy charity, have been voted Beverley Building Society’s winner for July, with a donation of £250 to aid their efforts in reducing low literacy in Beverley.
Janet Skeen, Beanstalk Area Manager for Yorkshire & North East, said;
“We are absolutely delighted to win Beverley Building Society’s ‘Charity of the Month’. The Society’s generous donation of £250 will go a long way to helping Beanstalk overcome the issue of low literacy in Beverley, by providing new books for Beanstalk’s reading helpers to use in their reading sessions.”
“A huge ‘thank you’ goes to all of the members who voted for Beanstalk as their chosen charity and we look forward to supporting many children in the local community this coming year.”
Beanstalk aims to ensure that each and every child in the East Riding of Yorkshire has the ability and confidence to meet the required reading level for their age, and has the opportunity to reach their true potential. Based upon KS2 SATS results for 2013-14, 10% of children in the East Riding of Yorkshire left primary school unable to read to the required level.
Beanstalk recruits, vets, trains and supports volunteers to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind with their reading. The money donated by Beverley Building Society will aid Beanstalk reading helpers in their efforts to improve reading attainment and confidence in the children they support in Beverley.
By working with children on a one-to-one basis, giving them consistent support to improve reading levels, increases overall confidence and helps them gain the vital literacy skills they need to succeed in life. With Beanstalk’s support, the child’s approach to learning and enjoying reading is often transformed. 93% of children supported by Beanstalk make meaningful improvement in their reading ability after just three terms of support.

Ed Davies Marketing Intern from the Beverley Building Society said;
“Having a support network in place to help children learn to read is vital for their own personal growth. With a charity such as Beanstalk working with children on a one-to-one basis, it provides the opportunity for those children to explore new ways of thinking and to uncover a world of imagination through reading.”
